Wainuiomata Kiwi Update

February 2007, By Melody McLaughlin

Hi everyone,

Happy New Year to you all and what a marvellous start to the year with the birth of our first chick; such a lovely way to balance the loss of Koniwi just before Christmas.

The cycle of life is well and truly active in the Rimutaka Forest Park!

Little known facts about Kiwi:

  • There are 5 different species of kiwi
  • Kiwi parents do not need to feed their young because the newly hatched chicks survive off the egg yolk which has been absorbed prior to hatching.
  • With our kiwi it's the male that incubates the egg
  • It can take up to 85 days from the egg being laid to the chick hatching out
  • Kiwi do not have a strong bone structure in their chest like other birds, because they do not have wings. Even a dog with a very soft mouth can still kill a kiwi by crushing it accidentally.
  • Our freshly hatched wee kiwi at Mt Bruce Bird Sancutuary

Our newly hatched chick is seen here at the Mount Bruce Wildlife Reserve

Manaia's 2nd egg lies in the leaf litter deep in her burrow

Manaia's egg was successfully incubated by her mate, Waikiwianui , in her deep, leafy burrow
